Bakesale Betty in Oakland & Cole Slaw Recipe

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Bakesale Betty, finally we’ve met!  We must be the only ones who hadn’t been to the infamous Bakesale Betty in Oakland.  You order at the counter.  Get a Chicken Sandwich or Salad, a lemon smoothie, and chocolate chip or molasses cookies!  Then you grab an ironing board out front and sit on a stool to chow down!  Their slaw is great.  Our friend Michele told us that their slaw recipe had been published online and we found it!  Check out the photographs above to see just how fine you need to chop the slaw ingredients.  You can even watch a video on how to make the Cole Slaw.

For the vinaigrette: Combine mustard, vinegar and salt in a bowl. Slowly whisk in olive oil until well blended.

For the coleslaw: Macerate onions in red wine vinegar, and let sit at least 20 minutes. Remove onions and discard vinegar. Toss onions with jalapeno, parsley, cabbage and salt. Toss with vinaigrette until evenly coated.

Tamarindo: Oakland

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

I read about Tamarindo in Old Oakland three years ago in Sunset Magazine and I have wanted to try it ever since.  The Tamarindo Margarita was my main interest (turns out it is rather sweet and the Mezcalito is what won us over) as well as the small plates.  We finally got around to it and we re-discovered some finer points of upscale-cuisine and upscale-Mexican Cuisine in particular:

  • Mezcal is wonderful with its smoky goodness in cocktails (Drank this in Tamarindo’s Mezcalito Cocktail (Del Maguel Crema de Mezcal – Orange – Volcanic Salt Rim))
  • Some Yelpers can summarize a spot in a few key words, some. This statement is pretty much spot-on, “Expensive, Small Portions, and Delicious.” This means you must go with a Cocktails-and-Small-Plates-State-of-Mind and sit at the bar OR make it a ladies night out dinner. Don’t go with a Super Burrito mentality (or a husband who needs 3,000 calories a day who will have to run through In-N-Out on the way home) because he will not get full on the sharable small plates concept, unless you have hours to eat, and a wallet filled with hundred dollar bills.

GrassRoutes Guides & Oakland Dining Recommendations Online

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

I met Serena of GrassRoutes Guides (Oakland, CA) at a Food Blogging dinner in SF and quickly wanted to know when she would come down and write a guidebook about Silicon Valley/South Bay because we are not the ugly step sister of SF.  I really liked Serena’s energy and optimism about Oakland in particular.  Now we have a ton more spots to check out in our often frequented Oakland (and then some spots from her other guides on SF, Wine Country, Portland, & Seattle).  Serena told me that Eco-Tourism should not just be for the exotic travels to such locales as Costa Rica but that even urban places in the Bay Area, that are Eco-conscious, can enrich and enlighten our travels and explorations at home.

The Oakland/Berkeley Guidebook page online has lots of restaurant descriptions and suggestions for places to eat in Categories such as:

  • Do Lunch (Bake Sale Betty – Famous Fried Chix Sandwich)
  • Casual Night Out – (One pick we’ve tried is – Dona Tomas – Great Cookbook and Creative, Upscale Mexican Spot)
  • Coffee Time (Blue Bottle of course! – Don’t miss it!)
  • Dress Up
  • Farm to Table
  • International Grocery
  • Sweet Tooth
  • Imbibe (Need to add Beer Revolution & Friday at Drakes Brewery to the list (I know it is in San Leandro but it is so worth it))

Beer Revolution: Oakland, CA

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

I will spare you the revolution metaphors, puns and bad jokes.  This place is about beer.  And not just good beer, but excellent beer.  Since the holidays are coming up, I’ll express my greatest desire: that Beer Revolution was move to within walking distance from my house.  Beer Revolution has every beer you can imagine for takeout or drinking there.  It has your IPA section, with your local Drake’s Denogginizer Double IPA, and your BrewDog Hardcore IPA out of Scotland.  It also has all your favorite Belgians and Belgian-styles, including some hard-to finds from Russian River Brewing.  There are Lambics and Guezes and everything that surrounds them.

Now, all I’ve been talking about is Beer Revolution’s refrigerators that line the left wall.  However, that leaves out one of the best reasons to spend an afternoon into an evening there.  That reason being the rotating taps of the same amazing variety held within the coolers.  There are ten to fifteen taps being poured, with almost a guarantee of one changing while you are there.

Since Beer Revolution is in Oakland, you have more of a chance that it will be warm there.  This means that you can take advantage of their outdoor deck and their openness to bringing outside food and having a picnic, then staying for a while to see what taps will change.

If you needed another reason to come, Beer Revolution also has great events.  There are weekly “Sweet and Sour Tuesdays” where sour ales and chocolate are paired and special events like the launch of new drafts from local breweries.

If you aren’t there already, you should be.

Savory Morning Bun @ La Farine: Oakland, CA

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

A friend works at La Farine in the Dimond District in Oakland and suggested that I try the Morning Bun, a savory ham, Gruyere, onion  pastry with a touch of dill.  It was out of this world good.  There was a slight crunch on the outside of the buttery pastry shell with moist, savory ham and a bit of dill on the inside.  Decadent and delicious.  I have to say it is just quality and is better than Bouchon Bakery, ah crap, did I say that?

Better put on your brakes @ Drakes Brewery: 1st Friday Event

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

$15 for three drink tokens & a great big Drake’s glass Mug ($3.50 for extra tokens)

$5 donation to a charity (usually a local school)

Roli Roti Porchetta Sandwiches! DJ, all ages but you obviously have to be 21 or older to drink.  Bring a DD for sure! (the food changes, so check their site for the vendor of day)

It is in a crazy location between a Walmart and Sports Authority in San Leandro, CA.

This past Friday evening: 4pm-8pm (That part was a bit hard to get to because of it being a work day and everything.)

Vishal (Special Bi0tF Guest):  The Imperial IPA was good (10%).  I was familiar with the Quasar from Jupiter in Berkeley and didn’t realize it was a Drake’s beverage.  The music was nice and it made me think the summer events at Drakes will be great when the weather warms up.

John: The beer was great and so was the food.  It was a really good atmosphere.  It was hard to get there with enough time to fully enjoy the even coming from work in the South Bay.  So I was only there from 6:30pm-8.  It makes me really appreciate the Bay Area because of all of the good beers!

Zach: What they said.  My favorite was the Denogginizer and the Stout was also very tasty.

Les: I tried some of the lighter beers, not just the 10% alcohol brews, such as the blonde, amber, and hefe.  But I have to say the Imperial (Double) IPA was also my favorite out of them all!
