Pimm’s Cup Cocktail Recipe

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Okay, friend Vishal Dave brought this cocktail to a post-wedding-party for friends at our house.  This is a drink that you don’t have to nurse, so everyone really liked that about it, in addition to its tasty drink-ability.  I even had to buy a punch bowl that day to accommodate this drink (and you can see above that I haven’t found a nice punch bowl ladle yet – check out Goodwill for cheap punch bowls galore).  Pimm’s Cup No. 1, although it would be great to call it ‘Pimp’s cup,’ is even more perfect for your grandmother’s ladies luncheon or afternoon gathering because it is very low in alcohol (50 Proof – 25% alcohol by volume and you don’t want your pimps or Grandma’s pimps to be too under the influence).  It is really tasty but doesn’t taste too much like gin, but has a clean, subtle fruit flavor with just a slight spice-taste!

Have you heard about Pimm’s and always wondered what it was?  We had.  Pimm’s Cup No. 1 is a gin-based drink with quinine (quinine has medicinal qualities) and herbs that was first produced in 1893 originally as a digestif in England.  Pimm’s is even one of the staple drinks at Wimbledon and at many polo matches (kind a’ high class I guess).

Pimm’s Cocktail Variations:

  • Pimm’s on the rocks in a Collins glass, sometimes with fruit garnishes
  • Pitcher of Pimm’s-  British Sangria when they serve it in a pitcher with lots of fruit.
  • Zin Cup pairs Pimm’s w/ red zinfandel and ginger beer
  • Two Islands Cup pairs Pimm’s w/ Irish whiskey, along with house-made lemon soda and chunks of honeydew
  • Creole Shrub Cup pairs Pimm’s w/a rum-based orange liqueur and a salad of mint, strawberries, cucumber, and orange and lemon slices

Pimm’s Cup No.1-6 Variations:

  • No. 1 Cup: Gin-based
  • No. 2 Cup: Scotch whiskey-based
  • No. 3 Cup: Brandy-based
  • No. 4 Cup: Rum-based
  • No. 5 Cup: Rye-based
  • No. 6 Cup: Vodka-based

Pimm’s Cup Cocktail Recipe

  • Ice cubes
  • 4 lemon slices
  • 4 cucumber slices
  • 1 cup seltzer or lemon-lime soda (OR Ginger ale or club soda)
  • 1 cup lemonade
  • 3 cups Pimm’s No. 1 Cup

Freeze an ice block for your punch bowl in advance.  You could even add lemon slices to it for beauty.

Slice up cucumbers and lemons for the punch bowl.  Then pour in the seltzer, lemonade and Pimm’s. Stir to combine.  Double the recipe for larger punch bowls.

1985 New Year’s Eve Cocktail Party Bar Necessities

In McCall’s Cooking School Magazine from 1985 we found this list of bar supplies for a cocktail party.  Apparently they could booze it up in 1985!

Booze for the Party • Approximately $309 (without tax, from Bevmo for all the Booze (used 750 ml bottles), mixers, & garnishes below)

*Note to self, don’t invite 30 people! AND, if you do, many DD’s are a good idea!

Here are their recommendations from American Bartenders School:

For a 4-Hour Cocktail Party for 30 people (multiply or divide as necessary):

  • 4-6 drinks per person
  • 1 Liter of Alcohol = 22, 1 1/2 ounce drinks

San Jose Native: What the locals drink!

  • Name: An
  • Occupation: Art Student with an Eye on the Time
  • How long she’s lived in San Jose: More than 20 years!
  • Favorite Local Eat: Mint Mojito Iced Coffee @ Philz Coffee
  • Location: San Jose, CA (Two Philz Locations in SF too)

An has lived in San Jose since she was one years old, so that counts as a native CA’er for sure!  She told me to go to Philz and order the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee and to get a large for a whopping $4.50!  She says you will want a large if you order a small and it is only .50 cents more than the small.   Philz even charges $3 for their drip cups of coffee and An claims it’s that good.  They make a mocha type of coffee drink with a frothy top and add fresh mint.  An discovered this drink in SF one afternoon and later found out they had a location in downtown San Jose where she now goes to get her fix while parked in a free, secret spot near the MLK Library. Thanks for the tip An!

Beer Revolution: Oakland, CA

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

I will spare you the revolution metaphors, puns and bad jokes.  This place is about beer.  And not just good beer, but excellent beer.  Since the holidays are coming up, I’ll express my greatest desire: that Beer Revolution was move to within walking distance from my house.  Beer Revolution has every beer you can imagine for takeout or drinking there.  It has your IPA section, with your local Drake’s Denogginizer Double IPA, and your BrewDog Hardcore IPA out of Scotland.  It also has all your favorite Belgians and Belgian-styles, including some hard-to finds from Russian River Brewing.  There are Lambics and Guezes and everything that surrounds them.

Now, all I’ve been talking about is Beer Revolution’s refrigerators that line the left wall.  However, that leaves out one of the best reasons to spend an afternoon into an evening there.  That reason being the rotating taps of the same amazing variety held within the coolers.  There are ten to fifteen taps being poured, with almost a guarantee of one changing while you are there.

Since Beer Revolution is in Oakland, you have more of a chance that it will be warm there.  This means that you can take advantage of their outdoor deck and their openness to bringing outside food and having a picnic, then staying for a while to see what taps will change.

If you needed another reason to come, Beer Revolution also has great events.  There are weekly “Sweet and Sour Tuesdays” where sour ales and chocolate are paired and special events like the launch of new drafts from local breweries.

If you aren’t there already, you should be.

Wine Tasting Party #2: Winners • Dierberg Pinot Noir & Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay

Friday, October 29th, 2010

When we want to have a really memorable party we have a wine tasting party.  Only certain guests can really appreciate an unsophisticated wine tasting activity.  This year, we told everyone to bring really good bottles.

A Fast Wine Tasting Set-up:

  • 3-5 people per group (Give everyone a # and don’t let couples be together in the same group)
  • Label each bottle with a number.  Divide up the whites and reds
  • Give each group a piece of paper labeled with a number for each bottle of wine. A wine rating of 1-5 will be decided on by everyone in each group.  5 is the best and 1 rating is the worst. (Of course, my group had to start giving 2.25 ratings and 1.75 ratings)
  • Designate a number cruncher at the party (Accountant, Actuaries, CFO, or an Engineer paired up with an Artist, Writer, or Teacher = Instant Fun) to figure out the winner.

White Winner (out of 4 whites):

  • Chateau St Jean Chardonnay (09 • $12.99 – 07 • #25.99) – (90 PTS WILFRED WONG)

Red Wine Winner (out of 10 reds):

  • Dierberg Pinot Noir 07 ($35-40) (Dierberg Pinot Noirs Rate between 90-95 PTS)

Out of Town: Ebenezer’s Pub – Lovell, Maine

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

In Lovell, Maine, fifty miles north-west of Portland, on a Lake Kezar Country Club and Golf course, you will find the best beer bar in the world according to Beer Advocate Magazine. Ebenezer’s Pub serves 35 Belgian beers on tap and over 700 well kept bottles.

By far, this is one of the most fantastic places to find beer anywhere.  Upon our arrival, we were lucky enough to be carrying a camera.  Often, this blatant exhibition of a photographic device will get you sneers, or at least sidewards glances of disquiet.  However, we happened out of our vehicle just as one of the owners was entering his hallowed beer cellar.  He shouted to us, “if you want some good photos, follow me.”  We followed him into the basement of a house easily built before the Jackson administration had taken office.  Click to continue »
